For an antidote to all that bland MOR wallpaper that passes for today's worship, try this second album release from Steve Counsel. Very seldom do I voluntarily continue to listen to a CD I am asked to review, but that one went on full blast just for my own pleasure. Steve calls his sound "Gospel Rock n Roll" and it's full of soul, with pop, folk, country and blues elements, unashamed gospel lyrics, an interesting band line-up and a groove that draws you in from the first note (which, incidentally, is an earful of Steve's gutsy harmonica playing). If I had to pick a favourite track, I'd go for "I Know Your Voice". It's certainly a retro sound, with echoes of Dylan and Clapton among others, but what's not to like? "Fisher Of Men" references Peter but is about encountering the demands of Jesus. The lead guitar weaves mesmerically round the strong vocal theme. Of the 13 tracks, Steve includes only one non-original; he does a brilliant version of "Amazing Grace", keeping it simple but heartfelt, with stunning, perfect harmonica and beautiful guitar from Albert Lee. I could rhapsodize about every track but enough to say that I loved it!
